Avignon

Situated on the Rhône River in south-eastern France, the impressive city of Avignon is a must for lovers of French culture, arts, medieval history and architecture. Once the capital of the medieval world, Avignon’s splendours have not diminished over the centuries.

The city is well known for its Palais des Papes (Palace of the Popes), where several popes and antipopes lived from the early 14th to early 15th centuries. The town prospered under pontifical rule and grew into a thriving city dedicated to the arts, religion and commerce. The Palace which dominates the cityscape is the largest medieval palace in the world.

Other historical landmarks include the city ramparts built by the Popes in the 14th century, are one of the finest examples of medieval fortification in existence and also the Bridge of Avignon, made famous throughout the world by the French song ‘Sur le Pont d’Avignon’.
