La Salette
Perched high in the Alps mountain range at almost 1800 meters, in the middle of breath-taking mountain pasture located in the region of Rhône-Alpes, is found the Sanctuary of Our Lady of La Salette.
The story of La Salette began on 19 September 1846 when the Virgin Mary appeared to two shepherd children, Maximin Giraud and Mélanie Calvat. This ‘Beautiful Lady’ talked to them and bestowed upon them a message for her people. It was a message of reconciliation, inviting people to convert their hearts.
In 1851, the Bishop of Grenoble officially authenticated this message from the Virgin Mary. The Sanctuary, comprising of a church and an adjoining hotel, was immediately built. A new religious community was also created to welcome and attend to the pilgrims. Today, the Missionary’s Congregation like the one of the Sisters of Notre-Dame de La Salette is not only present in the Sanctuary itself but also in many countries all over the world.
This remarkably beautiful Shrine located in the clouds, continues to draws thousands of pilgrims from all countries. Alongside Lourdes and Fatima, La Salette remains of the most famous Marian shrines of the modern age.
